Emergency Power Response - Have a Plan!

Power outages are never any fun, but in the winter, they can get particularly nasty. That’s why it’s important to have an emergency response plan in place before the power goes out.

A good plan should cover four essential things— lighting, comfort, communications, and nourishment.

The first thing you’ll want to have in a power outage is a good flashlight. Keep one where you can find it easily. Candles can be helpful, but they are dangerous if not used carefully. Battery-operated lanterns or LED lights are safer. Make sure the batteries are fresh and keep extras for backup.

Even gas furnaces may require electricity to operate so be prepared for this obstacle if your heat goes out. Cold weather is especially hard on infants, children and the elderly, so take the necessary precautions to ensure everyone will be comfortable and safe. Close doors, windows and curtains to keep the heat in. Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing. Pay particular attention to covering the head, feet and hands since these are where your body loses heat fastest. Have extra blankets available, too.

A fireplace can provide heat for a single room, and some wood-burning or pellet stoves can heat a whole house. Be sure to have plenty of fuel and use them safely. A gas-burning fireplace may require electricity to start, and any fans used to distribute the heat won’t be working. Never use a gas oven or cooktop for heat, as they can overheat and cause a fire. And never use a charcoal grill indoors since its fumes are toxic.

Pets need to be comfortable, too. If you have an aquarium or terrarium, be sure to learn the steps to take during a power outage to protect your valuable fish and other creatures.

A landline phone will usually work during an outage, but cordless ones need electricity to function. A cell phone should be unaffected, but needs electricity to charge. Don’t use it as a flashlight or for entertainment because that will drain its power quickly. Keep conversations short to conserve battery life. Keep a battery-operated radio handy for news and updates. Power surges can occur when the service is restored, so turn off computers, TVs and other sensitive equipment to protect them.

If the power outage is prolonged, you may need to eat before it comes back on. A gas stove may be functional for cooking or warming canned goods. If not, you may be able to use a fireplace or an outdoor grill for the job. Just be sure that any utensils can stand up to the heat. And remember, your electric can opener won’t work. Keep a manual one handy. Food should keep safely in refrigerators and freezers for several hours as long as the doors are kept shut.

Consider a backup power supply
