Arapahoe County was one of Colorado's 17 original counties, organized in 1861, and it now holds roughly 655,000 people, making it the third most populous county in the state. That size hides a lot of variety. Within one county line you find a city of about 400,000, a horse-property town of a few hundred households, a historic county seat, and a corporate office district. One county, many permit offices
The most common mistake we see on Arapahoe County projects is assuming the county handles every permit. It does not. Incorporated cities and towns run their own building departments or contract the work out: Centennial, Littleton, Englewood, Aurora and Greenwood Village each process permits through their own systems, Foxfield uses a contracted building official, and Columbine Valley's building department also handles permits for Bow Mar. Only properties in unincorporated parts of the county go through Arapahoe County's own building division. Some cities also require contractors to hold a local license before a permit is issued. We confirm the correct authority for your address before any work begins, so inspections are scheduled with the right office the first time.
