The City and County of Denver is the heartbeat of Colorado, the Capital City, and a national icon. With nearly 620,000 people, Denver is the nation’s 23rd most populous city, and the 10-county Metropolitan Statistical Area of which Denver is the hub boasts more than 2.5 million people and, as such, ranks 21st in the nation. Formed along the banks of what is now Confluence Park – the merging of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek – Denver was established in 1858 as the competing towns of Montana City, Auraria and St. Charles City, but a land speculator named General William Larimer laid a claim and called the settlement Denver City after the Kansas Territorial Governor James Denver. In the ensuing 150+ years, Denver has matured into the Queen City of the Plains and the Queen City of the West and has grown into a lovely, vibrant city filled with interesting neighborhoods, a wealth of businesses, a large and growing school district, and the 11th busiest airport in the world, Denver International Airport.
