HomeAdvisor began as ServiceMagic in 1999 as a resource to connect homeowners with pre-screened service professionals. It was acquired in 2004 by IAC, an American holding company with brands across 100 countries, including many in the home improvement sector. It merged with Angie’s List in 2017 to form ANGI Home Services, Inc., a Golden, Colorado-based consortium of home improvement and maintenance companies and is now the flagship company for homeowner services in the US, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria and the UK. Today, people throughout North America and Europe rely on HomeAdvisor and its affiliates to book quality home service pros across 500 different categories, from repairing and remodeling to cleaning and landscaping for more than 27 million projects each year.
Making the Grade
HomeAdvisor uses an extensive screening process to qualify businesses and their principals. They perform this screening when a business applies to join the network and, once the business is accepted, every two years following — or whenever concerns are brought to their attention.
The screening process includes:
- Identity verification
- Licensing verification
- State business filings
- Criminal background checks of owners/principals.
Contractors who don't continue to meet HomeAdvisor’s standards are promptly removed from the network.
