Denverites see led lighting at work

City & County Building saves a bundle using LED lighting for its annual display

DENVER, CO—If you’ve driven by the Denver City & County Building at 14th and Bannock this holiday season to view the traditional Christmas lights, you’ve seen LED lighting in action. For the first time ever, the city opted to switch from traditional lighting to cost-savings LED holiday lighting. The difference will be evident on the city’s energy bill even though the appearance of the lighting is no different than prior years.

The fact that the city has moved to this higher technology should reinforce for homeowners that LED lighting is here and is now. While the cost of LED fixtures and bulbs remains high, that too will come down in time, according to Gary Stone, president of Allstar Electrical in Denver. Stone likens the product to big-screen, plasma televisions when they were first introduced to the marketplace. Initially the TVs cost an average of $12,000. Now the product price has fallen to under $4,000 for the same product. It’s no different than the cycle of any other technological product—computers and calculators to name a few—when they first hit the market compared to prices as the technology becomes generally accepted.

AllStar Electrical located in Denver, Colorado is among the first full-service electrical contractors to bring home the brilliant new LED lighting options to the general public for use in residential and commercial buildingsnew build or retro-fit and remodel.

Used in clocks, computers and television screens, and automobile lights for a number of years, LED (Light Emitting Diode) is break-resistant, there’s no filament to burn out and the bulbs don’t overheat. Also because of the cooler temperature and lower energy requirements, LED bulbs last significantly longer than standard light bulbs. On average an LED bulb lasts between 50,000 and 100,000 hours, or if left on continuously, between 6 and 12 years. This is more than six times longer than a compact fluorescent bulb and 12 to 25 times longer than a standard incandescent bulb. The obvious advantages are that a consumer will buy fewer LED bulbs and spend less to operate an LED system than previous lighting systems.
